About Us

We are an independent charity (Triratna Liverpool) led by members of the Triratna Buddhist Order, a growing world wide Sangha of around 2,500 fully committed Buddhists, founded in London by Urgyen Sangharakshita in 1968, and associated with scores of Buddhist centres all over the world. Triratna learns from all the schools of Buddhism, integrating its approaches with the best of human culture. It is attempting to develop a spiritual tradition that can speak to us in the modern world.

Coming regulary

If you start to come regularly, you will find yourself part of an open and diverse community. Some are ordained Buddhists with several decades of deep experience, others are on the Buddhist path, but many are just here to explore, and to meet people with shared values of awareness and compassion. We welcome people of any ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation to come and explore with us what the teachings of the Buddha have to offer in our modern lives.

What is The Sangha ?

Who Is The Sangha For?

The Three Jewels is a universal Buddhist term for ‘The Buddha’, the founder of Buddhism, ‘The Dharma’, the teaching of the Buddha, and ‘The Sangha’, the people who try to follow the teachings of the Buddha.

The name of our Buddhist movement is ‘The Triratna Buddhist Community’ which literally translated means ‘The Three Jewels Buddhist Community’. This name was chosen by our teacher, Sangharakshita, because, he said, “Going for Refuge to the Three Jewels is the defining act of a Buddhist”.

Here at the Liverpool Buddhist Centre we have a weekly evening in which we meet together as a Sangha – that is as a collective of different people for whom the Three Jewels of Buddhism are interesting, meaningful or central in their lives.
This weekly event on Tuesday evenings is called ‘Sangha Night’.

Sangha Night is open to a wide spectrum of people. It is a great next step for people who have completed an introductory course in Meditation or Buddhism and would like to join Buddhists in practice, or are just curious to see what that’s like. It also works well for experienced Buddhists who want regular connection with others as a practice community.
And of course we always welcome visitors from other Triratna Buddhist Centres and other Buddhist traditions.
It is helpful to be familiar with the Mindfulness of Breathing and Metta Bhavana meditation practices, which are well taught to newcomers in introductory classes.
If you are very new you would probably be better to start with one of our courses
If you’re not too sure where to start, we would really encourage you to contact us, the LBC Centre Team, for advice. Click HERE for how to do so.
